R Ashwin Slams Potential Return of IPL Auction Rule

Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin has vehemently opposed the potential reinstatement of the Right to Match (RTM) rule in the IPL auction ahead of the 2025 season. The off-spinner argued that the rule is fundamentally unfair to players and distorts their true market value.

What is the RTM Rule?

The RTM rule allowed franchises to retain a player by matching the highest bid during the auction. This mechanism was initially introduced to ensure teams could hold onto their core players. However, it was removed during the 2021 mega auction to provide new franchises with a larger pool of talent.

Ashwin’s Stance

In a series of tweets and interviews, Ashwin explained his opposition to the RTM rule, using a hypothetical scenario to illustrate its flaws:

  • Unfair to players: Ashwin argued that the RTM rule doesn’t allow players to realize their true market value. Teams with the RTM card often enter the bidding process late, driving up the price before matching the final bid and acquiring the player at a significantly lower cost.
  • Distorts competition: The off-spinner contended that the RTM rule creates an uneven playing field, as teams with the RTM card have a significant advantage over those without. This can lead to inflated player values and reduce the overall competitiveness of the auction.

Impact on the IPL

The potential return of the RTM rule has sparked a debate among fans, players, and experts. While some believe it is necessary to retain key players, others argue that it undermines the spirit of the auction. The BCCI is currently considering various options for the upcoming mega auction, including the number of retentions and the possibility of reinstating the RTM rule.

Ashwin’s outspoken criticism of the RTM rule has added fuel to the fire and is likely to influence the BCCI’s decision-making process.
