PV Sindhu Creates Brilliant Record At China Open, Registers Fastest Smash

Changzhou, China – Double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu, despite an early exit from the China Open 2025, has made headlines by setting a new record for the fastest smash in the women’s singles category. This notable achievement marks a significant moment for the Indian shuttler.

A Glimmer of Silver in a Challenging Run

Sindhu, who has faced a tough period with no titles in the past seven months, found a much-needed silver lining at the prestigious China Open. While her tournament run concluded in the second round after a loss to fellow Indian Unnati Hooda, her powerful smash showcased her enduring talent and strength.

During her campaign at the China Open, P.V. Sindhu unleashed a blistering smash clocked at an impressive 397.2 kilometers per hour (kph). This speed has been confirmed as the fastest recorded smash in the women’s singles category, a testament to her immense power and athleticism. This record was set despite her being currently ranked 15th in the world.

China Open Journey: A Mix of Highs and Lows

Sindhu’s journey at the China Open began with a convincing win over Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki, a world No. 6 player. This victory was a morale booster for Sindhu, especially after a series of early exits in previous tournaments. However, her run was cut short by a surprising defeat to the young Indian talent Unnati Hooda in the pre-quarterfinals.

Context of Smash Records in Badminton

While Sindhu’s smash is a new record in women’s singles, it’s worth noting the overall fastest badminton smash ever recorded. India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest badminton hit, with an astonishing smash of 565 kph (set in April 2023 under controlled conditions). Among women, Malaysia’s Pearly Tan previously held a record of 438 kph, also set in controlled conditions. Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand has also recorded a high speed of 372 kph during a match. Sindhu’s 397.2 kph in a competitive match environment is a remarkable feat for women’s singles.

This new record highlights P.V. Sindhu’s continued ability to deliver powerful performances on the court, reaffirming her status as one of the most formidable players in women’s badminton.
