Mirabai Chanu’s Heartbreak: A 1kg Gap from Bronze at Paris 2024

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, Mirabai Chanu, narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Paris Olympics 2024. The diminutive powerhouse from Manipur ended up in the fourth position in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category, a mere 1 kg shy of the bronze medal.

A Strong Start, A Bitter End

Chanu began her campaign with a promising lift of 85 kg in her first attempt of the snatch round. However, she faced challenges in the subsequent rounds. Despite overcoming hurdles, she managed to lift a commendable 88 kg in her third and final attempt in the snatch.

The real drama unfolded in the clean and jerk. Chanu’s initial attempt of 111 kg was successful, but she needed a lift of 114 kg to stay in contention for a medal. Unfortunately, despite her valiant effort, she couldn’t secure the required lift, leaving her in fourth place with a total lift of 199 kg.

A Cruel Twist of Fate

The weightlifting arena witnessed a thrilling climax as China’s Zhihui Hou clinched the gold with an Olympic record lift of 117 kg, totaling 206 kg. Romania’s Valentina Cambei secured silver with 205 kg, while Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao claimed bronze with 200 kg.

Chanu’s near-miss has left the nation in disbelief and sorrow. Known for her indomitable spirit and resilience, the weightlifter has consistently proven her mettle on the global stage. This heartbreaking loss is a testament to the razor-thin margins that separate champions from also-rans.
