Mercedes Face “Mount Everest-Sized” Challenge to Rein in Red Bull.
Mercedes has conceded that they face a formidable task in closing the gap to Red Bull next season, describing the challenge as “Mount Everest-sized.” The reigning Formula One champions endured a difficult 2023 campaign, finishing a distant second to Red Bull in the constructors’ championship.
Speaking after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which concluded the season, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the significant advantage Red Bull holds heading into 2024.
“Red Bull have set a new standard,” Wolff stated. “They have a very strong package, and they have been very good at developing their car throughout the year. We have a lot of work to do to close the gap to them.”
Wolff compared the challenge to climbing Mount Everest, emphasizing the magnitude of the task ahead.
“It’s like climbing Mount Everest,” he remarked. “It’s a very difficult task, but we are determined to do it. We have a lot of talented people at Mercedes, and we are confident that we can make progress over the winter.”

Mercedes’ struggles in 2023 stemmed from various factors, including porpoising issues that plagued their car early in the season and aerodynamic deficiencies that limited their performance.
“We made some mistakes along the way,” Wolff admitted. “We didn’t always understand our car as well as we should have, and we made some strategic errors. But we have learned from our mistakes, and we are determined to put in a stronger performance next year.”
Despite the daunting challenge, Wolff remains optimistic about Mercedes’ chances of reclaiming the championship in 2024.
“We know that we have the potential to be successful,” he asserted. “We have a great team of people, and we are always striving to improve. We are not going to give up without a fight.”
Red Bull’s dominance in 2023 has set a high benchmark for Mercedes to chase, but the team is confident in their ability to bridge the gap and challenge for the championship next season.
