Kabaddi Match Turns Fatal: Three Electrocuted in Chhattisgarh’s Kondagaon

Kondagaon, Chhattisgarh: A kabaddi match in Ravaswahi village turned tragic when three people were electrocuted after a high-tension power line came into contact with a metal tent pole during a sudden storm on Saturday night.

According to officials, the strong winds brought the 11 kV line down onto the iron pole supporting the spectator tent, instantly electrifying the structure. Villagers rushed to rescue the injured and six people were taken to hospital.

What Happened

  • The match was in progress at Ravaswahi village, which comes under the Baderajpur development block, Kondagaon district.
  • A sudden storm swept through the area. Amid strong winds, an 11-kilovolt (kV) high-tension power line snapped—or rather was brought by wind to touch — the iron pole supporting the tent set up for spectators.
  • Once contact was made, the whole metal structure became electrified, causing electric shocks and burns among people in the tent. Villagers nearby quickly responded and six people who had been affected were taken to the hospital in Vishrampuri.

The deceased were identified as Satish Netam, Shyamlal Netam and Sunil Shori, all residents of nearby villages. Three others sustained injuries, with two reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation, while the incident has raised serious concerns over safety standards at rural sporting events and the maintenance of overhead power lines in storm-prone regions.

In a place where a kabaddi match might be the highlight of community life, bringing people together in joy and competition, this incident is a reminder of how fragile such moments can be when safety is compromised. For the families of Satish, Shyamlal, and Sunil — and for the broader village community — this loss is immeasurable.
