Germany Secure Knockout Berth with Dominant Win Over Hungary

Germany became the first team to qualify for the Euro 2024 knockout stages after cruising to a 2-0 victory against Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday. The win marked their second consecutive in Group A, solidifying their position as one of the top two teams or at least among the best third-placed sides.

Musiala Strikes Early (With Controversy)

Germany took the lead midway through the first half thanks to a goal from Jamal Musiala. However, the celebration was met with Hungarian protests, who felt a foul should have been awarded in the build-up to the goal. A brief Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review confirmed the decision on the field, allowing Germany to maintain their advantage.

Gundogan Doubles the Lead

Germany continued to dictate the pace of the game and doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Ilkay Gundogan converted a neat cross from Maximilian Mittelstaedt, placing the ball calmly past the Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Germany Presses for More

Despite the comfortable lead, Germany continued to push for more goals. Toni Kroos had a shot deflected away in the second half, while Hungary’s Barnabas Varga narrowly missed an equalizer with a header. Germany threatened further through Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane, and Niclas Fuellkrug, but Gulacsi stood firm in the Hungarian net, denying them a third goal.

Germany’s Path Forward

With this victory, Germany has secured their place in the next round, although their final group position will depend on the outcome of their remaining fixture. They will be looking to maintain their winning momentum and build confidence as they head into the knockout stages.

Hungary’s Hopes Dwindle

Hungary, on the other hand, sees their qualification chances diminishing after suffering their second consecutive defeat. They will need a positive result in their final group match and favorable outcomes in other games to progress to the knockout round.
