FIH Hockey Pro League: India Lose Manpreet Singh’s 400th Match, Suffer 2-3 Defeat vs Australia

Antwerp, Belgium – The Indian men’s hockey team’s struggles in the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League continued on Sunday, June 15, 2025, as they suffered a 2-3 defeat to Australia. The match, held at Sportcentrum Wilrijkse Plein in Antwerp, also marked a significant milestone for Indian midfielder Manpreet Singh, who earned his 400th international cap. Unfortunately for India, the occasion was marred by their sixth consecutive loss in the league.

Milestone Match for Manpreet Singh

The match was a landmark event for veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, as he became only the second Indian men’s hockey player to achieve 400 international caps, a testament to his enduring career and significant contributions to Indian hockey. Only the current Hockey India President, Dilip Tirkey, has more caps for India (412). Despite the personal achievement, Manpreet expressed his disappointment with the team’s ongoing losing streak.

A See-Saw Battle

The game started with promise for India, who took an early lead in the third minute through Sanjay, who capitalized on a rebound from a penalty corner. However, Australia quickly responded, with Tim Brand leveling the scores in the fourth minute, followed by Blake Govers putting them ahead just seconds later. Australia extended their lead to 3-1 in the 18th minute with a goal from Cooper Burns.

India fought back in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 3-2 in the 36th minute when Dilpreet Singh scored a field goal set up by Abhishek. Despite a spirited final quarter and creating several half-chances, the Indian team could not find the equalizer, with Australia’s defense holding firm to secure the victory.

India’s Losing Streak Continues

This 2-3 loss to Australia marks India’s sixth successive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League. The team has faced tough competition and, despite often playing close matches, has been unable to close them out in their favor. With 15 points from 14 matches, India currently sits seventh in the FIH Pro League standings.

Manpreet Singh, reflecting on the team’s performance, acknowledged the unfortunate run of results but emphasized the need for deliberation and a bounce-back. India will aim to break their losing streak in their final two matches of the FIH Pro League 2024-25, where they are scheduled to face Belgium next weekend.
