Chelsea’s £75m Star Mykhailo Mudryk Charged For Doping; Facing Four-Year Ban

London, UK – Mykhailo Mudryk, Chelsea’s highly-priced winger, has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA) with anti-doping rule violations, a development that could see him banned from the sport for up to four years. The 24-year-old Ukrainian international has been provisionally suspended since December 2024 after an “adverse finding” in a routine urine test.

The Charge and the Prohibited Substance

The FA confirmed the charge, stating that Mudryk has violated “Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA’s Anti-Doping Regulations,” which pertain to the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance. Reports indicate the banned substance found in his sample is meldonium, a performance-enhancing drug added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list in 2016.

Provisional Suspension and Player’s Denial

Mudryk was provisionally suspended in December 2024 following the initial positive “A” sample. He has not played for Chelsea since November 2024 and has been undergoing an individual fitness program at home.

Upon the initial adverse finding, Mudryk released a statement expressing his “complete shock” and vehemently denied ever knowingly using any banned substances or breaking any rules. His position, according to his legal counsel, remains unchanged, and he will not be commenting further at this time due to the confidentiality of the ongoing process.

Chelsea Football Club has also stated that they fully support the FA’s testing program and have been aware of the investigation from the start. They emphasized that Mudryk strongly denies the allegations and is cooperating with the inquiry. The club also launched its own internal investigation into the matter.

Potential Four-Year Ban and Precedents

Under current FA anti-doping regulations, a positive test for a prohibited substance like meldonium can result in a ban of up to four years, especially if intent to cheat is established. However, if a player can prove that the violation was not intentional or involved a contaminated product, the ban could be reduced.

The case has drawn comparisons to other high-profile doping cases in sports, such as Maria Sharapova’s, which also involved meldonium. While rare in football, such instances carry severe consequences for a player’s career.

Impact on Mudryk’s Career and Chelsea

Mykhailo Mudryk joined Chelsea in January 2023 for a reported fee of around £75 million (or €88 million from some sources), signing an eight-and-a-half-year contract. His time at Stamford Bridge has been challenging, with limited impact and an underwhelming goal tally of 10 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions.

The legal process is expected to be a long one, with Mudryk and his team reportedly working to clear his name and potentially argue for contamination of his sample.
