Angelo Mathews Bids Emotional Farewell to Test Cricket; Jay Shah Posts Special Note

Sri Lankan cricketing stalwart Angelo Mathews has officially retired from Test cricket, playing his final match against Bangladesh in Galle. The veteran all-rounder drew curtains on a distinguished 15-year career in the longest format, receiving widespread tributes from across the cricketing fraternity, including a special note from ICC Chairman Jay Shah.

A Storied Career Concludes in Galle

Angelo Mathews’ last dance in Test whites came to an end after Sri Lanka’s drawn first Test against Bangladesh at the Galle International Stadium. The 37-year-old, who made his Test debut at the same venue in 2009, was visibly emotional as he walked off the field for the final time. He received a guard of honour from the Bangladesh team, acknowledging his immense contributions to the sport.

Mathews ends his Test career as Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer, accumulating 8,214 runs in 119 matches at an impressive average of 44.40, including 16 centuries and 49 half-centuries. Only legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene stand ahead of him in this esteemed list. He also contributed with the ball, picking up 33 wickets.

Mathews Reflects on Memorable Moments

In the post-match presentation, Mathews expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received throughout his career. “Since I announced my retirement, I can’t believe the love that I have received so far. I am certainly overwhelmed. Ever so grateful to all those who supported me right throughout. It wasn’t an easy journey; there were a lot of ups and downs, happiness and sadness. But through it all, I was able to do it because of the support that I have received,” he stated.

When asked about his fondest memories in Test cricket, Mathews highlighted two significant achievements under his captaincy: Sri Lanka’s historic Test series win in England in 2014 and the dominant 3-0 whitewash of Australia at home in 2016. “The win against England in England and whitewashing the Australians in Sri Lanka 3-0, that was a huge highlight and honour achieved by the entire team,” he added.

Jay Shah’s Special Tribute

Among the many well-wishes pouring in, ICC Chairman Jay Shah posted a special note congratulating Mathews on his illustrious Test career. Taking to social media, Shah wrote, “Congratulations on a fantastic Test career, Angelo Mathews! More than 8000 runs across 16 years shows your dedication and longevity in whites, and sets an example for future stars of the game.”
